Joy Reid’s MSNBC Show Canceled Amid Major Programming Overhaul
MSNBC is canceling The ReidOut, Joy Reid's popular evening show, as part of a significant programming shake-up led by the network’s newly appointed president, Rebecca Kutler. The final episode of Reid’s 7 p.m. show is set to air this week, marking the end of a five-year run. The ReidOut had been a staple of MSNBC’s lineup, offering in-depth interviews with politicians and newsmakers.
The network plans to replace Reid’s show with a new panel-format program co-hosted by Symone Sanders Townsend, a former Democratic strategist; Michael Steele, the ex-chairman of the Republican National Committee; and Alicia Menendez, a seasoned TV journalist. The trio currently co-host The Weekend, which airs on Saturdays and Sundays.
This programming overhaul is the first major change under Kutler’s leadership, following her appointment as president earlier this month. Kutler is aiming to revitalize MSNBC’s lineup to boost the network’s ratings, which, while surpassing CNN, still lag behind Fox News, the longstanding ratings leader.
Other notable changes are anticipated. In January, MSNBC's most prominent anchor, Rachel Maddow, returned to hosting her 9 p.m. show five days a week, after scaling back to Mondays. The network also announced that Alex Wagner, who had hosted the 9 p.m. slot four days a week, would return at the end of April.
This shake-up signals a shift in MSNBC's strategy to adapt to the changing political landscape and enhance its competitive position in the cable news market.
